7 Questions to Ask When Choosing an Advertising Agency

Choosing an agency starts with the right questions, not the shiniest pitch. 7 questions on team, strategy, budget and chemistry for your first meeting.

7 Questions to Ask When Choosing an Advertising Agency

Most agency searches start in the wrong place: the shiniest pitch deck. But what tells you the most about an agency isn't the work in its showreel. It's how that work got made.

We've sat on both sides of this table many times. We've pitched, we've listened to brands explain why they switched agencies, and we've cleaned up after partnerships that fell apart halfway. Here's the pattern: most relationships that go wrong do so because of questions nobody asked in the first meeting.

So set aside "which agency is the most creative?" and bring these seven questions instead. Whether you're looking for an advertising agency in Istanbul or anywhere else, the answers will tell you far more than any presentation.

Look past the showroom, into the kitchen

1. What problem was this work solving?

Every agency has a beautiful film or a striking campaign visual to show you. What you really want to know is which problem it was built to solve.

When the agency walks you through a project, do they start with the brand's challenge, or jump straight to how cool the idea is? The first points to a team that thinks strategically; the second, to a team chasing awards. That's why, when we talk about our work, we always start with "what was the brief, and what were we trying to change?"

2. Who will actually do the work?

The team that pitches isn't always the team that delivers. Founders and senior names run the presentation; once the project starts, it lands on the desk of someone you've never met.

Ask it plainly, up front: who's our day-to-day contact? Who leads the creative? How often does the team change? An agency that can't answer clearly probably hasn't asked itself.

Continuity sounds like a detail. It isn't. A team that has learned your brand, your past decisions and your internal dynamics doesn't start from zero with every new brief. A team that keeps rotating asks the same questions over and over, and you quietly pay for that learning curve.

Strategy, or just execution?

3. Will you push back on our brief?

This may be the most important question on the list. An agency that calls everything you say "a great idea" is a comfortable partner in the short run and an expensive mirror in the long run.

A good agency reads your brief and, when needed, says "I don't think that's the real problem." Being able to say that politely but clearly is the most valuable part of the partnership. If it's unclear what a brand says, to whom and why, even the best creative falls flat. That's why we enter so many projects through brand strategy and positioning.

4. How will we measure success together?

"We'll raise brand awareness" isn't a goal; it's a wish. Ask the agency what you'll look at, at the end, to say "this worked."

Sales? Store traffic? A shift in perception? A real community forming on social? If the yardstick isn't agreed at the start, everyone brings their own spreadsheet to the wrap-up and nobody convinces anybody.

Also ask how often, and with what kind of report, you'll review those measures. A regular, honest review rhythm forces both sides to look at the same reality, whether things are going well or not.

Process: working without surprises

5. How do you manage budget and revisions?

Budgets rarely blow up because of big decisions. They blow up through small surprises: an extra shoot day, an unexpected licensing fee, a revision loop that never ends.

Ask how the quote is built, how many revision rounds are included, and how budget changes get approved. A transparent agency shows you the cost lines and isn't shy about saying "this request changes the budget by this much." In anything involving production, that discipline matters as much as the craft. It's why we treat project and production management as a specialism of its own.

6. What happens when something goes wrong?

Something always goes wrong. It rains on shoot day, approvals stall, a platform changes its rules at the last minute. What matters isn't whether problems appear, but how they're handled.

Ask the agency to tell you about a real crisis and how they solved it. Be careful with anyone who answers "that never happens to us." Either they haven't done enough work, or they're not being straight with you.

Chemistry: the criterion nobody writes down

7. Why do you want to work with us?

Flipping the question around is revealing. How well does the agency know your brand, your category, your competitors? Do they genuinely want to work with you, or just add another logo to the client wall?

Good partnerships are ones where both sides choose each other. An agency that's curious, asks questions and makes you think in the first meeting is usually on the right track. Look for a team that listens, not just one that presents.

Chemistry seems impossible to measure, but it leaves clues. After the first meeting, ask yourself: would I want to sit at the same table with these people on a hard day? If the answer comes with hesitation, that hesitation will resurface mid-project, however polished the pitch was.

The bottom line: the right agency starts with the right questions

Choosing an agency isn't a beauty contest. It's a long-term partnership decision. The slides are forgotten within weeks; what stays is how you work together.

These seven questions won't guarantee a flawless agency. But they'll show you, much earlier, which one speaks your language.

The best agency isn't the one that says "yes" the most. It's the one that knows when to say "no, let's do it this way."
